Name: Lesson Plans Competition Project

Objectives:

Overall Objective: To ensure that a larger cross section of teachers in selected provinces have the tools, incentive and resources available appropriate for a language or cultural context to generate interactive and factual lesson plans on HIV and AIDS.

Specific Objectives:

• To create a resource website that provides basic information on HIV and AIDS, sample lesson plans on HIV and AIDS and the competition kit that encourages teachers to join the competition and generate their own lesson plans on HIV and AIDS.
• To provide an incentive for teachers to teach their own lessons on HIV and AIDS to their students and to increase the knowledge of their students on HIV and AIDS related to aspects of prevention, treatment and care.
• To recognize the role that teachers play in HIV and AIDS prevention by providing recognition to the award winning lesson plans.
• To establish a website section that could be extended and expanded through inclusion of the winning lesson plans on HIV. These lesson plans could be downloaded by teachers interested in teaching lessons on HIV and AIDS.

Describe educational and learning methods/tools applied:

One of key criteria for this competition is “To apply active learning methodology”. Therefore a lot of different methods are present: role play, group discussion, word games, learning games, brainstorming, visualized lecture, etc.

Besides, since these lesson plans will be uploaded in MOET’s website, they are electronic lesson plans with powerpoint support, very much visualization with pictures, diagrams and also movies of how HIV penetrates into human body, how HIV develops inside human body, etc.

By doing this, the best lesson plans will be shared with a huge number of teachers all around the countries where they can access internet. This competition is at low cost but high coverage and high effectiveness.

11 best lesson plans were selected among 705 entries. All of them promoted maximum participation of pupils.

The Education & Times Newspaper and MOET will produce a DVD with the best entries and they reserved 2,500 US$ of their own budget for this. These DVDs will be delivered to all DOETs of 64 provinces and cities of Vietnam. This means with a limited budget, the final products of project can be shared with a great number of beneficiaries who are teachers and schools in the whole country.

There has been a lot of advocacy for teaching on HIV. Thanks to the competition aspect there was a lot of media attention. At the same time, some media was sensitized for the HIV and education issue. VTV1 wishes to produce a longer and more intensive report on HIV education and asked for our cooperation.

Name: Discovery and re-discovery of the Muong Culture through Education in Tu Ne Commune, Tan Lac District, Hoa Binh Province

Goals and objectives:

• Provide school teachers with student-centered learning approach.
• Raise cross-generational community-based self-awareness through stories sharing about the Muong culture values, such as family values, environmental values, life and death and how these values have changed over time.
• Help students learn how to draw using local materials, and to use the camera and recorder.

Name: To develop new graduate-level programs linking natural resource management and poverty alleviation with Hanoi Agricultural University and Hue University of Agriculture and Forestry

Goals and objectives:

The Asia Institute of Technology (AIT) staff will work together with faculty from HAU and HUAF to identify the natural resources research and training issues in the highlands areas of Central and Northern Vietnam in order to conceptualize the subject matter and direction for a new graduate program in integrated natural resources management that would be offered at both Vietnamese universities. The masters degree curricula will be jointly prepared by AIT, HAU and HUAF faculty, and a detailed program will be developed that outlines activities for the first three to five years of the new graduate program.  An important feature of the program will be the collaborative sharing of research, policy dialogue, and publications.  As part of the research process, one faculty member each for HAU and HUAF would develop a doctoral dissertation on a selected issue at AIT.

Name: “Mekong Women for Community Development Program (MWCD)”

Objectives:

Mekong Women for Community Development (MWCD) seeks to empower women in the Mekong Delta through leadership development and engagement in grassroots community development projects. With an emphasis on capacity building, MWCD provides leadership training that equips women with skills, resources, and other tools to design and implement their own local projects that promote the growth of healthy communities and the investment in young girls and women.

Describe educational and learning methods/tools applied:

Phase 1: ToT (Training for Trainers) 40 women selected from three provinces in the Mekong Delta participate in leadership trainings on community development including needs identification and assessment, resource mobilization, proposal writing, and team building.

Phase II: The 40 women from Phase 1 in turn become Lead Trainers and replicate trainings for groups of 5 women each from their own local communes and villages. Following the trainings, each group writes a project proposal addressing a pressing issue identified through a community needs assessment

The MWCD program endorses:

• Education that promotes critical thinking and problem solving skills: Community women in rural areas, who often have little to no academic education, have established their own project groups for community development, written out their own proposals and plans to carry out projects, and carried out their plans to help many needy members in their communities.
• Education that encourages and stresses participatory decision-making responsibility: The women’s groups consist of approximately 7 members, each with assigned titles and tasks. They work together to prepare reports, presentations, community activities, etc.
• Education that is locally relevant and culturally appropriate: All projects take place within the local communities and all are culturally appropriate, especially groups such as the clay stove-pot vocational training group, for example, have been established with the objective to provide community members with skills to make stable incomes while preserving the clay stove-pot custom of the culture.

Stakeholders:

Pacific Links Foundation; MWCD donors, including US Department of State and the Bureau of East Asian Pacific Affairs (EAP); the Women’s Unions of Kien Giang, An Giang, and Can Tho; other organizations and groups that have expressed interest and devoted support for the women’s groups, including SODIS and Horizon Capital Group.
